“Manchester City FC can confirm that Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee,” the team said in a statement on Thursday.

The Germany international lasted just nine minutes in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Liverpool, after appearing to suffer a twisted knee. Speaking after the game, City manager Pep Guardiola said he didn’t expect the injury to be serious. However, after tests this week, the extent of his injury was revealed, though no timetable for recover has been set.

“He has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury,” the team statement continued.

“Leroy will have surgery in the coming week. Manchester City will provide Leroy with all the support and guidance he needs, and everyone connected with the Club wishes him a quick and full recovery.”
