Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly had his request to take over as Manchester United captain rejected by interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
The 38-year-old is claimed to have believed he would have done a better job than current skipper Harry Maguire.
According to ESPN, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner demanded the Red Devils armband following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But Rangnick, who took over in December 2021 until the end of the campaign, declined his plea after refusing to bow to his demands.
It has been said Ronaldo’s request almost caused a rift in the United camp as a result of dressing room politics.
After Rangnick departed Old Trafford to take charge of Austria’s national team last summer, Erik ten Hag kept Maguire on as skipper ahead of Ronaldo.
Ronaldo and United ultimately parted ways in November following the Portugal international’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Meanwhile, Maguire is out of favour under the Dutchman with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez the preferred centre-back pairing.
It’s not the first time that there have been rumours that Ronaldo looked to take the armband off of his ex-teammate.
Speaking last February, Maguire labelled it as fake news, as he said on social media: “I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another.
“Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear.
“We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone.”
Rangnick also discussed the rumours last year, as he remarked: “This is absolutely nonsense.
“I have never spoken to any player about a chance in captaincy, Harry is aware of that and Cristiano.
“It’s me who decides who is captain and I don’t have to talk to anyone else about that.
“Harry is our captain and he will stay our captain.”
But it remains to be seen whether Maguire will still be United’s leader next season, with ESPN reporting the club will consider a reasonable offer for him.
The news outlet states that United have concerns over the 30-year-old’s ‘perceived lack of mobility’ and his ‘tendency to rush out’ from the back.
The England international has started just five Premier League games this season after losing his place in the team.
