Russia has said it wants to host the Euros in 2028 – despite being banned from international football over its invasion of Ukraine.

The Football Union of Russia posted on its website on Wednesday that it “supports the decision to declare interest in hosting the European Championship 2028 or 2032 in Russia”.

Russian clubs and its national team have been banned by both FIFA and UEFA following Moscow’s decision to go to war with Ukraine last month.

And St Petersburg was stripped of the right to host the men’s Champions League Final after the war broke out.

Russia has appealed against the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

But the current ban does not appear to have deterred it from wanting to host the European football championships.

Earlier reports from Russia quoted its football union’s executive committee member Sergey Anokhin suggesting it would launch a bid.

Currently the UK and Ireland are vying with Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia to host the tournament, Sport Express reported.

Last month, the football associations of the home nations and Ireland abandoned a potential joint bid to host the football World Cup in 2030 to concentrate on hosting the Euros in 2028.

Russia hosted the 2018 World Cup, while Ukraine and Poland jointly hosted Euro 2012, with one of the major stadiums in the now-Russian-occupied region of Donetsk.

UEFA will confirm official candidates for Euro 2028 on 5 April, with a decision in September.
